Questions to Ask During Your Hospital or Birth Center Tour
Choosing where you will give birth is one of the most important decisions you'll make during pregnancy. Whether you're planning a hospital birth, considering a birth center, or planning to give birth at home, taking a tour of birth locations outside of your home can provide valuable insight into the environment, staff, policies, and support available during your labor and birth experience.
The goal of a tour isn't simply to see the space,
it's to learn whether the facility aligns with your vision for birth.
Many families attend tours without knowing what questions to ask, leaving with just the initial impression of the facility and very little understanding of how their birth experience may actually unfold during their time there.
Below are some important questions to consider asking during your hospital or birth center tour.

What happens when I arrive in labor?
Movement & Labor Support
Are wireless fetal monitors available?
Do you have birth balls, peanut balls, squat bars, or labor stools readily available to all patients?
Are there tubs or showers available for hydrotherapy during labor? What is available in each room?
Are there providers available within the hospital who are comfortable and trained in water birth?
How often do you care for families planning unmedicated births?
Interventions
What are the most common reasons you recommend induction?
What induction methods are available here?
If I decline an intervention, how accepting are providers of my decision?
Medical Pain Management
What pain relief options are available (epidural, IV medications, nitrous oxide, etc.)?
Is anesthesia available 24/7?
How quickly can I receive an epidural if I request one?
Pushing & Birth
What is your typical approach to coached pushing versus spontaneous pushing?
If I need a cesarean birth, can my support person and doula join me in the operating room?

While policies and statistics matter, don't overlook how the environment makes you feel!
As you tour, ask yourself:
Does the space feel welcoming and comfortable?
Do the staff seem supportive, kind, and respectful?
Does this environment align with my vision for birth?
Are my questions welcomed, valued, and answered thoroughly?
Sometimes your intuition can tell you just as much as the answers you receive!
